Stay Informed
I know that parents are busy. I don't know how you do it all! But if you didn't have a chance to read my last blog post, please scroll down to learn about ways to get involved in your child's sophomore year! The Google Classroom and Remind tools are invaluable for parents!
Google Drive TOOLBOXI have opened up the access to my English 2H Toolbox on Google Drive so parents can have "view" access just like all of my students do. Please choose to "Add to My Drive" or save it as a bookmark on your home browser so you can see all of the work and resources that your children have. My English 2H students can help you with this at home. |
As you know, we have been using a new textbook for English this year. Things are going well. You may have heard from your child that the texts are challenging, and that's because they are! I encourage you to ask your child to log into my.hrw.com and show you the online text so you can be aware of what they are doing.
Collection 1 was about "Ourselves and Others". We read a play (12 Angry Men) two short stories, a very challenging court case decision, op-ed article, and an entire novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. These were our SCHOLAR GOALS for the novel; students rose to the challenge and excelled!

Everything we've been doing this past quarter has been about preparing them for the SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT (ESSAY) that we worked on last week. All students have been SO DETERMINED TO SUCCEED that I am inspired! Their rough draft should be done and they are now working on the revisions stage. I welcome you to click here to see the resources I've created for them to "meet them in the middle" and help them succeed.
Their final draft is due this WEDNESDAY, 11/16 for 250 summative points (deadline was pushed back due to another essay also being due in History on Monday, so I didn't want to overload them). This is a HUGE DEAL. Please encourage them to work on their essay DAILY at home. Thank you for your help!

Collection 2 commences
Collection two of the HMH textbook focuses on the universal concept of the "Natural World". The "Essential Question" we will be revisiting regularly is "We are intertwined with nature; in what ways do we affect it as much as it affects us?" Maybe you can bring up this question during conversations with your teenager during dinner or other family events.
I have set the following Scholar goals for my classes as we go through this collection:
1.Analyze the use and meaning of language (figurative, connotative, technical, poetic)
2. Determine central ideas & theme
3.Compose/state clear claims with relevant textual evidence and reasoning (C.E.R. & S/M/M)
4.Build confidence in presentation skills & class participation
5.Comprehend challenging texts.
6.Scholarly Habit goal: improved time management and comfort levels with online resources
I welcome you to visit our Collection 2 Toolbox Folder on Google Drive to see the resources that are added nearly daily as we travel through the texts.
We will be finished with Collection 2 right before our Winter Break holiday and will begin Collection 3 in January, to wrap up the semester.

Teacher Collaboration

The English 2P & English 2H team continues to work together on a daily or weekly basis to ensure that all sophomores are getting the best education possible! We benefit from our collective ideas and approaches. Google Drive has been a vital resource in our collaborative efforts as has planning time, such as our weekly collaboration days (Wednesdays) and our upcoming Staff Development day on November 28th (non-student day). The ELA Mariner Team is strong during this new textbook year!
