If you are on this site, that means that you want to be "in the know" and get involved in your child's education.  So THANK YOU!  You are a VITAL piece of the puzzle in these oh-so-important high school years.

Click the "Read More" link to the bottom right to learn about some ways that you can continue to stay up to date on what is going on in our English 2 Honors course.    I hope you take advantage of both opportunities.  At the bottom, I share the quick updates for my class.

Thank you for joining me on this school year voyage!

REMIND

This is one of my favorite Tech Tools in the classroom, hands down!  All of my 2H students are enrolled , and I would encourage you to enroll as well.

What Remind does is once you are registered to a specific class period (the one your child is in), you will get text messages (or email if you prefer) with my updates and reminders. But I don't text or email you directly.  So I don't have all of your children's phone numbers; the app sends out the messages for me.  I typically send no more than 2-3 a week, and sometimes I go a week or so without any texts.  The important thing is that you can have the inside scoop on upcoming deadlines and reminders that will help you support your student at home.

You can also download the FREE APP which is fun and learn more about this tool here.

New Google Classroom "Guardian" feature

Picture

Many of you have heard about Google Classroom, no doubt, by now.  If not, please ask your child to log in for you at home so you can see what it is all about!  It's a game changer for teachers everywhere!

But the one thing I've never liked much about it is the fact that parents can't see what's going on.  Well, they've fixed that. Now a new feature allows teachers to "invite guardians" to our Google Classrooms.  This invitation allows you to sign up for DAILY or WEEKLY email updates which share recent announcements and assignments shared on Classroom as well as updates in terms of what was or was not completed on time.

I'm not suggesting that you check up on your child daily and bug them about every thing that you see on the site.  What I  am  suggesting is that you at least sign up for this access and try it out.  Maybe you'll like getting notifications.  It may allow you to have those much-desired conversations with your child about "their day".  Instead of just hearing "School was fine", you can ask "I saw that in _____ class your teacher is asking you to _____.  How's that going? You enjoying it?"  Something like that.  Maybe you'll get a more detailed response ;-)

You should have received an email notification by now that allows you to ACCEPT (see sample below).  Once you accept a Google Classroom invitation, you will automatically gain access to ALL of your student's Google Classroom pages.  This is an ADDED BONUS!

If you don't see the email notification, check your SPAM or Updates section of your email or search "Google Classroom" in your email search box.  If you still don't see it, please email me at shousepian@ggusd.net and I'll look into it for you.

Here is a blog post I found that does a great job explaining this new feature.
I HOPE YOU WILL JOIN SO WE CAN TRY THIS OUT TOGETHER!

What's next in English 2H?

Here's a quick recap of this past month in my class:
  • We got to know each other and built our "family" of learners.
  • learned how to use  the online textbook
  • Started our first "Collection" in the new textbook...boy are those texts challenging!  But we are rising to the challenge together!
  • Students are getting lots of feedback on their writing. Some may feel discouraged.  Please remind them that it's a "marathon, not a sprint" and their improvement will come over time and with effort and grit!
  • We are starting To Kill a Mockingbird this week and I'm SO EXCITED!  This is always one of my students' favorites.  If you are interested in reading the book along with us (or maybe listening to the audible file), you can keep up with our reading schedule by checking out the final pages of our UNIT GUIDE.
