Homework

My philosophy on homework:
Homework gives students the opportunity to expand their knowledge on something already covered in class. Students should not be expected to complete an assignment at home that they have not yet had sufficient instruction on from the teacher.
Homework is also part of the student’s commitment to learning. The teacher comes to class having prepared challenging and meaningful lessons for her students; students come prepared to learn by completing necessary assignments or reviewing at home. It’s a partnership in learning, not a one-sided effort! Keep that in mind if you expect to succeed in my class!
You can expect homework every night. Some nights there may be a specific assignment from the textbook, novels, or
other materials. Some nights you may just have to review your recent notes and work to prepare for ongoing quizzes and
tests. Others you may just be asked to enjoy a book at home. Regardless, every day, you will leave my class knowing what
is expected of you for the following day’s class so you can arrive ready for success!
Missing assignments may cause you to get a "Scholar Ding', which results in the loss of an Extra Credit Hall Pass or other privileges, so stay on top of your work!

late work

Generally speaking, I believe work should be turned in by the due date. Period. However, I am aware of extenuating circumstances as well as the stresses that high schoolers face today. Consequently, below is my Late Work policy:
I encourage open communication between myself and my students. If you are facing something in your personal life
that is directly affecting your ability to complete assignments for my class, you NEED TO COME TELL ME ABOUT IT. Come see me or send me an email explaining the situation. Together we can come up with a solution!
- All formative (and many summative) assignments not turned in on the due date will be labeled as “M” for “Missing” in the AERIES grade book. Note that you will not see a red box if you didn’t turn something in. But do not be mistaken; missing work will SEVERELY affect your grade, as an "M" = 35% (that's an F !!!)
- You are allowed to turn in Late Work of FORMATIVE assignments for up to 70% of the original points within ONE WEEK of the due date. That means that the absolute best score you could get on something is a C- IF it is turned in within a week. If it is turned in later than one week after the original deadline, it remains as an "M" (missing).
- Summative assignments will have a case-by-case policy depending on the assignment. The late work penalty on these assessments may be more severe as students usually have more time to complete them.
- Missing assignments due to absences is a different situation. See "Absences" below.
- If it is a HARD COPY assignment, you will need to personally hand it to me within ONE week of the due date.
- If it is a DIGITAL assignment, submit your work as directed and then SEND ME A PRIVATE EMAIL (shousepian@ggusd.net), explaining the situation.

ABSENCES & Make-up WOrk

Students are responsible for all class work and homework in the case of an excused absence.
Extra handouts can be found in the bin in the front of the room and most assignments/class work can be found on Google Classroom or on that week's Voyage Board doc page.
Ask classmates for the missed agendas and make up the work according to my policies below:
YOU ARE EXPECTED TO EMAIL/TEXT-Remind/SEE ME PRIOR TO ANY ABSENCES TO FIND OUT WHAT YOU WILL BE MISSING. Only extreme circumstances should stop you from doing this. You do not need to tell me why you are out (you can deal with attendance office for that); however, in order to stay on top of the fast paced nature of this honors class, finding out what you'll be missing ahead of time will help you from falling too far behind.
If you are absent the day an assignment is DUE:
You must hand it in on the day you return to school. (Additional time may be allowed at the teacher’s discretion) . However, for summative assessments, you will be expected to turn them in regardless of an absence. If you know you will be absent, you must make arrangements with Mrs. Housepian ahead of time. Otherwise, you must email Mrs. Housepian the assignment or have a parent submit it to the front office. Failure to do so will result in severe grade penalties.
If you are absent the day an assignment is GIVEN or an ASSESSMENT is taken:
You are allowed ONE WEEK to turn in make-up work OR take a missed quiz/test/exam (from the day you return to school). See the "Late Work" policies above for submission requirements.
It is the responsibility of students to stay on top of missing work due to absences. If you miss the ONE week deadline, it will remain as an "M" (35%)!
If you are truant (unexcused absence):
You will not be allowed to make up any work and you will not receive ANY credit for the assignment. No exceptions.
Warning: Excessive absences may affect a student’s grade due to a lack of in-class participation.

leaving class
Hall passes: you may leave no more than SIX times a semester from my class, so make them count! I don’t care why you leave, as long as it is for a legitimate reason. If you wish to leave, you will need to...
*Any leftover Hall Passes at the end of the semester can be turned in for EXTRA CREDIT!!!! |
tardies

Class starts when the bell rings. Students are expected to have their materials ready and be IN THEIR
SEATS PRIOR TO THE BELL RINGING. Otherwise, you WILL be marked as tardy.
*NOTE: You may choose to use one of your Hall Passes to excuse ONE tardy a semester.

academic honesty

I take plagiarism and cheating of any kind very seriously. A student’s work is something of pride
and effort and by no means should be taken or used by someone who has not put in their own pride
and effort.
Any cheating incidences will result in a referral to your Assistant Principal.
Cheating will severely affect your grade in this class!
See the Pacifica High School Academic Honesty Policies for more up-to-date details and consequences.
